Speakeasy

Speakeasy
True North Book 5
Sarina Bowen
May 29, 2018

Sometimes you fall for Mr. Right. And sometimes for Mr. Right Now…

May
Did you hear the one about the girl who walks into a bar and catches her live-in lover kissing someone else? No? You’re the only one in town who missed it.
Luckily Alec is there to wrap me up in strong arms and carry me out the door before things get too ugly. And that’s not all Alec is good at. Our unexpected chemistry makes him the perfect rebound guy.

Alec
I should know better than to hook up with my rival’s little sister, but the fiery look in May’s eyes really turns my crank. She needs cheering up, and I’m just the guy for the job.
It’s not like I’ll fall in love. Not even after a string of scorching hot trysts, and the realization that we’re good at the same things: wild nights and familial disappointment. I don’t do love, never have, never will. So this is the perfect arrangement, for both of us.
Nobody would approve, but nobody has to know.

Speakeasy started off a little confusing for me since at the beginning May is dating a woman, and then even has an inner dialogue about her female best friend. It seemed a little odd to me to have that much attention on the fact that she was into girls all while the hero was more of a background character. I'm in no way, shape, or form saying I had a problem with her being bisexual, just that it had questioning if she was even going to end up liking the hero in a romantic way.

Once I got past those parts though, and Alec started to get more of the attention focused on him, I became entranced with his and May's story. Seeing them together was so fun and I loved the dialogue between them. Alex could be a little immature at times but it always made me laugh at how silly he could be and I thought his personality mixed perfectly with May's more stern one.

Overall, this is a great book and one I think anyone would enjoy. It had a really light vibe to it all while dealing with more serious subject matters, mainly May's alcoholism, and I thought it was great that this author blended the seriousness with a more lighthearted feeling. This book can definitely be read as a standalone without feeling lost or confused about secondary characters that are mentioned.

Cross

Title: Cross
Author: Adriana Locke
Series: The Gibson Boys #2.5
Cover Designer: Kari March at http://www.karimarch.com
Goodreads: http://bit.ly/CrossGR
Release Date: Friday, May 25, 2018

Cross Jacobs was a screw-up.
Everyone knew it, especially him, and the point was hammered home when Kallie Welch drove herself right out of his life. But, she’s back.
Seeing Cross wasn’t on Kallie’s to-do list. She didn’t think she could avoid him forever but trying never hurt anyone. One minute she’s standing by herself and the next she’s accosted by a rich, velvety scent that could only belong to one man: Cross. At face value, he’s divine. All rugged and confident with a smile that melts her right where she’s standing. It doesn’t take long to find him to be charming, witty, and the owner of a few legitimate businesses. Not at all like the mischievous boy she left.
He laughs and her heart flutters. With a touch of his hand, she’s dizzy. She’s fairly certain she’s going to die when he pulls her into an embrace and touches his lips to her forehead. It feels right. It feels so right.

But is it?

Cross was a short and sweet novella that takes place before Crank and can be read as a complete standalone novella. This second chance romance was very easy to get into and despite only taking place over a short amount of pages it never felt rushed to me. Both characters had me very intrigued and I liked getting to see them get back to their happy ever after. We didn't learn too much of what split them up the first time but being such a short book I was okay with that and not knowing didn't take away from the story at all.

Overall, this novella is a recommend from me.

Bringing cooking into the bookworld is such a fun idea! I had a great time creating some of the recipes that were featured in this book and it was tasty too! I couldn't turn down a White Chocolate Cranberry cookie so of course I had to make that one and then I made Veggiedillas with Avocado Dipping Sauce. Both of which were amazing and I will definitely be making them again sometime soon.

Veggiedillas with Avocado Dipping Sauce

4 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup water
1 cup sliced onion
8 burrito size flour tortillas
1 cup sliced baby bella mushrooms
Nonstick cooking spray
1 cup sliced bell pepper (red, yellow or green)
2 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend
1 packet taco seasoning mix

In a medium skillet over low heat, melt butter and sauté onions, mushrooms, and bell pepper for 8-10 minutes. Add taco seasoning and water. Simmer for 5 more minutes and remove from heat. In a medium skillet over low heat, coat with cooking spray and lay a tortilla flat in the skillet. Cover half of the tortilla with sautéed veggies and cheese. Then fold the empty side on top of the mixture and allow to cook for 2 minutes, pressing down with a spatula. Next, flip the quesadilla and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Remove from heat and repeat this process with remaining ingredients. Cut quesadillas into thirds and serve with Avocado Dipping Sauce.

Avocado Dipping Sauce
2 avocados
1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon salt
Juice of 1 lime
In a stand-up mixer, add avocado, yogurt, garlic, salt, and lime. Blend on low for 1 minute.

Thoughts:
These were seriously so good I didn't even want to share them with my family, I just wanted to eat them all for myself. The dipping sauce made this dish the best thing of my night. It blended so well with the veggiedilla's and added a lot of flavor to them.

I don't like peppers so I did not add them to my filling, instead I did a little more of the mushrooms and it worked perfectly. It's a very easy dish to make and also if you have any picky eaters you're trying to feed it's very simple to add or take something out so you can personalize each veggiedilla as needed.

White Chocolate Cranberry Cookies
1 stick butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
1 cup dried cranberries

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, using a hand mixer, cream together butter and sugar until smooth, then add egg and vanilla. Slowly add flour, baking soda and baking powder until blended. Stir in the white chocolate chips and cranberries. Place 1 tablespoon at a time on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 12-14 minutes.

Thoughts:
These cookies were so yummy! I loved the flavor of the cranberries with the white chocolate and they were super soft, which is how I like my cookies, so I loved them. It was almost a little cakey in texture but I thought it was great.

I made these the week after Mother's Day weekend, the same weekend I made cupcakes for a Graduation party on top of a cake for Mother's Day, so I split this recipe in half since I already had so many many sweets floating around the house. I still had about 15 cookies so the full recipe should make well over two dozen, just so you know.

Also when you're making this don't feel like you did something wrong when you see how loose the batter is. At first I was a little worried about it, even double checked I had everything correct, but the cookies turned out fine.

And if these recipes don't already have you salivating for this book, here's an excerpt from the stories featured.

Breathe is the second installment of Carly Phillips new series Rosewood Bay. The story follows Phoebe Ward as she runs into her first love, Jake Nichols, who also happens to be the father of her young son. She hasn't seen him since her Aunt took her out of foster care but he's always been on her mind. Now that he's back though she has no idea how she's going to break her big news to him.

I thought this was a sweet novel and I really thought it spoke to how strong a connection Jake and Phoebe had that they were able to so easily bring their lives together after so long apart. It was easily recognizable that these two belonged together and they were pretty cute together. I was glad there wasn't a ton of drama involving their son since it made the story so much better to instead see how quickly Jake and Jamie bonded.

The drama that was involved and that I didn't like though was with Jake and his ex-wife. I just didn't see the point of having a witchy woman involved in the story and it kind of took away the breezy vibe that Jake and Phoebe brought to the book. And then it just confused me in the end when there really wasn't a discernible conclusion to that drama.

Overall, I really did enjoy this story and I liked getting to know more about Phoebe after first meeting her in the previous book. If you're in the mood for a more contemporary romance with some very likable characters then this is the one I would recommend.

Excerpt

“Are you my guardian?” she quipped, trying to keep things light as she tipped her head slightly, studying his tight, serious expression.

“I want to be.” His voice was serious as hell. His tone rubbed her in the most intimate way, her body swaying toward him.

“Jake.” He reached out a hand to cup her face, his calloused fingertips rough against her skin. So intense were his features, so erotic was his touch, his protectiveness cloaking her in heat. Her nipples even puckered into tight points of need.

“If I had my way, nobody would be able to take advantage of you, because they’d have to go through me in order to get to you.” Her face warmed at his words.

“That’s sweet of you to say.”

“I’m not feeling very sweet. In fact, I’m feeling pretty damned protective.” He was, and she liked it. A lot. His fingers skimmed her cheek as he spoke.

“I was lucky enough to find you again. I want a chance to see what could be between us,” he said, taking her off guard. But God, she wanted that, too.

Despite her brain telling her they needed to tread carefully, that they had a little boy to protect, her traitorous heart still wanted more. His blue gaze bored into hers, causing her heart to pound hard in her chest.

“I know things are complicated right now, but how many people get second chances?”

“Not many,” she agreed, knowing how lucky they were.

“So wouldn’t we be foolish to waste the opportunity?”

Wow just wow.
What a book I don't even now where to start with this review. My emotions are just a mess. I 've been happy sad crying laughing I think everyone in my house think I m crazy. I actually think I mite be. This authors just keeps getting better and better with every book. There isn't a book that's I haven't luvd. I 've been really looking forward to this book since we got to know Bane from Scandalous. Bane is a hot surf, a con, a liar, a thief and fraud. How could you not like him. He is so confident and very sexy it's not hard to get caught up in him. He is always a step ahead of everyone. He know what he want and get its. Plus the women luv him and he luvs them it's all part of the job. I luv his character so much. The way he was with Jesse it's was hard not to luv him.

Jesse is such a strong girl. It hard not to luv her and want to protect her. This girl has gone through so many horrible thing it's heart breaking. Life has been very up and down for her. But the last 2 year have been the worst dealing with what happened as been hard on her and having really no really support just made things worst. Until Bane came crashing into her life like a wave he was surfing.

There relationship was never going to be smooth sailing. But seeing Jesse get strong and dealing with what happened was so great to see. Bane was her strength she even wore him down. Seeing him turn into this guy that knew he could luv and want to be with one woman was so cute. It's actually hard to put Bane and cute into the same sentence but he was. They were just so perfect together.

I really really really enjoyed this book. Like I said there isn't a book I have luvd from this author. This story did break me in parts. I was so sad for Jesse I need something good to happen to her. I found I was just like Bane in this book and got protective of her very quickly. There wasn't a part of this book that I didn't luv the story flowed so well. I got hooked to the story from the beginning to the end. It just kept getting better and better. I can't recommend this book enough or any of her other book. But this book was amazing.

When we were first introduced to Bane in the previous book it was very easy to try and paint him the villain. He was crass and unapologetic and too used to getting what he wanted. And in his own story he is no different. He shows no shame for his ways and proved to me that I have very bad taste in men because damn was it attractive. His confidence didn't waver and I loved it along with his rough around the edges character.

Jesse, she broke my heart. She went through so much pain in her life and was still dealing with that when this book opened up. She could have given up on life and I would have completely understood. But then Bane was there to give her the kick in the ass that she needed to get out and live her life again. I loved that he wasn't easy on her, he understood her worries and helped her as much as he could but he wouldn't let her hide. Seeing him bring out that tough side Jesse kept hidden was the best part of this story and why I loved it.

Once Jesse started to open up more we got to see a completely different side to her. That new side also brought amazing banter between her and Bane that I loved. I felt like it really showed that their connection was more than him wanting to fix her. Because in the end he gave her the tools but she was the one that fixed herself.

Bottom line, this is now one of my favorite LJ Shen books and a book I highly recommend reading. I would say it could be read as a standalone since there are only a few small cameo's from previous characters but nothing that would confuse you or spoil anything.

EXCERPT

Bane
Then.
A liar.
A con.
A godless thief.
My reputation was a big wave that I rode, one that swallowed everyone around me, drowning every attempt to fuck with what’s mine.
I’d been known as a stoner, but power was my real drug of choice. Money meant nothing. It was tangible, and therefore easy to lose. See, to me, people were a game. One I’d always known how to win.
Move the rooks around.
Change the queen when necessary.
Guard the king at all fucking times.
I was never distracted, never deterred, and never jealous.
So, imagine my surprise when I found myself being all three at once.
It was a siren with coal black hair who robbed me of riding the biggest wave I’d seen that summer. Of my precious attention. Of my goddamn breath.
She glided from the ocean to the beach like nightfall.
I crouched down, straddling my surfboard, gawking.
Edie and Beck stopped beside me, floating on their boards in my periphery.
“This one’s taken by Emery Wallace,” Edie had warned. Thief.
“This one’s the hottest masterpiece in town.” Beck had chuckled. Con.
“More importantly, she only dates rich bastards.” Liar.
I had all the ingredients to pull her in.
Her body was a patch of fresh snow. White, fair, like the sun shone through her, never quite soaking in. Her skin defied nature, her ass defied my sanity, but it was the words on her back that made my logic rebel.
It wasn’t her curves or the way she swayed her hips like a dangling, poisonous apple that warranted my reaction to her.
It was that tattoo I had noticed when she swam close to me earlier, the words trickling down the nape of her neck and back in a straight arrow.
My Whole Life Has Been Pledged to This Meeting with You
Pushkin.
I only knew one person who went gaga over the Russian poet, and, like the famous Alexander, he was currently six feet under.
My friends began to paddle back to shore. I couldn’t move. It felt like my balls were ten tons heavy. I didn’t believe in love at first sight. Lust, maybe, but even that wasn’t the word I was looking for. No. This girl fucking intrigued me.
“What’s her name?” I snatched Beck’s ankle, yanking him back to me. Edie stopped pedaling and looked back, her gaze ping-ponging between us.
“Doesn’t matter, bro.”
“What’s. Her. Name?” I repeated through a locked jaw.
“Dude, she’s, like, way young.”
“I will not repeat myself a third time.”
Beck’s throat bobbed with a swallow. He knew damn well that I didn’t mess around. If she was legal—it was on.
“Jesse Carter.”
Jesse Carter was going to be mine before she even knew me.
Before I even knew her.
Before her life turned upside down and her fate rewrote itself with her blood.
So here was the truth that even my lying ass wouldn’t admit later on in our story—I wanted her before.
Before she became business.
Before the truth caged her in.
Before the secrets gushed out.
I never did get to surf that day.
My surfboard broke.
Should have known it was an omen.
My heart was going to be next in line.
And for a small chick, she did one hell of a fucking job obliterating it.

Stripped

Stripped
Tara Wyatt
Blue HEAT Book 1
May 15, 2018
Detective Sawyer Matthews isn’t just having a bad day—he’s having the worst day. His hunt for the criminal who killed his team member has stalled and now… he’s got to play nice with his new, totally unwanted partner. It’s not that she isn’t qualified, or that he doesn’t like her—it’s because he knows what she looks like naked. So very, very naked.

Brooke Simmons finally landed her dream job working for H.E.A.T, an elite undercover detective squad, and she’s not giving up simply because she had a one-night-stand with her sullen—but undeniably sexy—new partner. They’ll just have to keep it professional. Easier said than done, considering their first case requires Sawyer to infiltrate a drug cartel operating out of a male strip show. Watching him do his best Magic Mike impression every night isn’t just hot—it’s torture.

Sawyer doesn’t need any distractions, yet his attraction to Brooke is explosive and he can’t resist going for round two. Or three. Or four. But as their investigation progresses and danger mounts, they’ll have to put their jobs, hearts, and lives on the line to fight… for each other, for survival, and for justice.

Stripped is the first novel in Tara Wyatt's new Blue HEAT series and follows Sawyer and Brooke after they share a steamy night together, never expecting to cross paths again, only to later discover that Brooke is Sawyer's new partner at work. With the pain still fresh from losing his last partner, and friend, Sawyer isn't too happy to get stuck with a new Detective especially one as distracting as Brooke. But this is Brooke's big chance to prove herself as a Detective so she isn't backing down easily, no matter how much she wants to jump Sawyers bones.

I found this story to be really interesting and it was easy to get right into it and involved with these characters. I loved the chemistry that was between Sawyer and Brooke and I thought it was a nice change of things that they had a insta-lust connection instead of an insta-love one. Instead we got to read on and discover how their feelings of lust turned into love.

There were a few scenes surrounding the whole cop-take-down situation that I had issues with. They seemed a little rushed and for me there just wasn't enough attention focused on that part of the story. Also there was a nod to 21 Jump Street it seemed but I didn't particularly like that some of the things that happened almost felt like they were taken right from the movie. Maybe that was me, who knows, but that's how I felt about it.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book for anyone that want's a steamy cop story. Next up is another HEAT detective getting his story and I can't wait to learn more about him.

Um....So this book is...Yeah, I don't even know. It's been almost two days since I finished Tacet a Mortuis and I still haven't been able to come up with any words that I can put into sentences that actually describe this book. Honestly though that's pretty much how I've felt since the beginning of this series. And the weird part is I somehow like that these books can confuse me so much.

What I can say about the story is that it was extremely captivating. I went into it pretty nervous that I wouldn't remember much about the past installments and would be lost but that actually didn't happen. The author didn't really go back and explain anything that had already occurred, but this book does start off with the scene that ended the last book so then as the story moved on I fell right back into these characters and a was able to remember a ton of what happened. From there is was just one excitement after the next and I didn't want to put the book down.

However, even though I was intrigued by what was going on there was a handful of scenes that I just didn't feel were necessary to the story. A few times the book did feel like it was starting to drag and I just didn't understand why certain things were distracting away from the main storyline. It was mostly drama between Madison and Bishop that just felt forced into the story and didn't really flow with everything going on. They have a very weird and volatile relationship which I've been liking throughout this story but there were parts in this book that I honestly didn't see any connection between them. By the end they made up for all that drama but it was still on my mine a little.

This book definitely leaves us with a ton of new questions and even older questions that still have not been answered. My head is still spinning trying to figure out what exactly is going on. I do like that fact a little, that this story has me so involved that I'm just dying to know what is going on, but at the same this is apparently going to be a 13 book story and I just don't know if I can go that long with feeling this confused over things. For now though I'm hella intrigued and will definitely be waiting to dive into the next book, which I believe will follow different main characters but still be set in this world and plot.

COVEREVEAL.jpg

The Varlet and the Voyeur, an all-new standalone in the USA Today bestselling Rugby Series from Penny Reid and L.H. Cosway is coming June 14th!

He kept his salacious secret for years. But soon, everyone is going to be reading about it in their morning paper…

THE VARLET (and the VOYEUR)

William Moore is a long way from home. A farm boy from Oklahoma, he’s now the most well-respected member of the Irish rugby team. But appearances are often deceptive, and Will isn’t the clean-cut, all-American good-guy everyone imagines him to be. He’s got a secret, one that will tarnish his reputation forever.

THE VOYEUR (and the VARLET)

Joesy Kavanagh is a self-proclaimed mess, but she’s finally get her shi…uh, act together. She’s set her sights on becoming a veterinarian, but there’s one teeny tiny road bump. Her living arrangements are coming to an abrupt end, leaving Joesy homeless and in need of a job to pay her way through college.

THE PLAN

What he needs is a companion to keep him on the right path.

What she needs is an apartment with free rent.

Will is convinced Joesy will make the perfect companion, since she’s brutally honest and basically ‘just one of the guys.’ Joesy is convinced she can ensure Will doesn’t succumb to his voyeuristic proclivities by keeping a scrupulous eye on him.

Except, what happens when the varlet is tempted by the voyeur, and vice-versa?!

Perchance something very, very volatile. And vexing.

The Varlet and the Voyeur is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the 4th(and last) book in the USA TODAY bestselling Rugby Series.

Excerpt

“Hello?” Phoebe called out.

“In here!” a masculine voice said, sounding like it came from the far side of the house.

She followed the sound and noticed a man talking on the phone, his back to her. He was tall, well built, muscles defined, as she took him in from behind. And what a behind he had, a tight ass in his faded jeans.

She ogled the sight shamelessly, her gaze traveling up his lean waist and broad shoulders. His dark hair was short and the jet-black color she preferred on a man. He wore a light blue button-down, sleeves rolled up, revealing sexy forearms.

And then he turned to meet her gaze, giving her one raised finger to indicate he needed another minute on the phone. Except she wasn’t paying attention to the gesture, because one look at that handsome face, more mature than she remembered but just as good-looking, and she froze.

Vivid blue eyes widened at the sight of her in return.

She wasn’t just looking at a stranger, she was staring into the shocked eyes of her son’s father, a man she hadn’t seen since before she found out she was pregnant.

“Jake?” she whispered, unable to comprehend the fact that she was standing in the same room with her first love. Her first everything.
