Hunter

Born into blood, I was a mafia princess. Raised in hiding, I was a Californian sweetheart.
The day my father sold my thirteen year old body to pay off a five year old debt was the day my mother stole me in the dead of night. She protected me as she was supposed to.
My father may have been the king, but my mother was the queen.
The mafia blood was hers.
That was ten years ago. Now… the devil was on the loose.
Carlo ‘Hunter’ Rosso was my father’s right hand man and the boy I’d loved since I could tie my own shoelaces. He was always the most ruthless and the most deadly of all the children.
He’d thought I was dead until the day his assignment was given: Kill Adriana and Alexandria Romano. Kill the princess, and definitely kill the queen.
What he didn’t know was that the queen was dead, and the princess had taken her throne.
Blood didn’t lie. It smeared, distorted, stained. But it didn’t lie.
My father was going to learn the hard way that the empire he’d stolen belonged to me.
And so did Carlo ‘Hunter’ Rosso.

EXCERPT:

“Staying, are you? Figure it's easier to kill me in my sleep?”
Once again, he rubbed his hand across his face. He said nothing.
“Trying to work out whose life is worth more, right? Mine is probably worth a lifetime of comfort for you. Kill me and everyone's happy, right? My pathetic excuse for a father gets to keep his empire and you're taken care of for life.”
He looked at me, and his expression was a little tortured. I was being harsh. I knew that. But I needed to be. It was easier to provoke him and be angry with him than give in to the horrible ache that had settled in my heart.
“Adriana...” Weak. The word was weak.
I wanted to ignore the indecision on his face, but I couldn't.
He was considering it.
He really was.
I scoffed quietly at him and grabbed the gun from the coffee table. His mask and gloves fell to the floor, but he made no move to pick them up. The safety was on the gun, and I held it out to him. “Here. Take it. I don't care, Hunter. I don't have much of a life here in hiding anyway.”
He didn't even look at the gun. His silvery gaze never left mine. I wished he would look away, because in that gaze, I saw the Hunter I knew. The boy who once ripped his favorite shirt to stem the bleeding when I fell and cut my leg, then proceeded to carry me home. The boy who offered to pee on my foot when I got stung by a jellyfish in Mexico on vacation when I was seven.
The boy I loved before I knew what love even was.
“You're weak, Hunter,” I whispered. Slowly, I turned the gun back to me and touched the barrel to my temple the way he did earlier. His jaw clenched when my thumb edged toward the safety, and when my finger moved to hook around the trigger, he moved.
He was like a lightning bolt. He came at me like a flash, snatched the gun from my hand, and dropped it on the sofa. It bounced but stayed on the seat, and then he turned on me with blazing eyes. “Don't,” he ground out, his arms tensing and looking even bigger. “Don't ever fucking put that to your head again.”
“Why? I was saving you the job.”
The words had barely left my lips when he pounced on me. It was deadly, the way his hands clasped my face and his mouth descended on mine. I staggered back into the wall, gasping at the ferocity of his movement. Shock paralyzed me as he kissed me harshly. His tongue ran along the seam of my mouth, and as I fisted the sides of his shirt, I bit his lower lip.
A low growl left his throat, but he didn't relent. He just kissed me harder. He kissed me until I was fucking spinning and could barely string two thoughts together. Until my whole body was alight with his touch and responding to his every movement.
He tasted like whiskey. The strong, rich taste that lingered on his lips was heady and only added to the intoxicating way he touched me.
And then... It hit me. He was touching me. Kissing me.
Twenty minutes ago, he could have killed me.

"Addy I need you to come with me. now." Those were the words that changed Adriana Romano's life ten years ago when she was only thirteen years old. Her mother, the Queen of the Romano family, took her away from her home when she learned that her father had sold her to cover a debt. When Adriana was taken away she didn't just leave behind her home, she left her best friend. But when he shows up out of no where after ten years, she knows it's definitely not a happy reunion.

Carlo 'Hunter' Rosso had a piece of him break the day he was told his best friend had died. For ten years he has mourned her loss and there hasn't been a day that he didn't think of her. So when he's told that she's alive after all this time apart he should be ecstatic, right? He's more tormented than anything when he finds out, though, because now he's been ordered to kill her.

I loved the mystery that was involved in this story. There was a lot that we had to figure out, and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Even Hunter was a bit of a mystery since the author made it so that readers couldn't tell is he could actually be trusted or not. It kept the story exceptionally interesting.

Adriana was a intriguing character and I enjoyed getting to see her grow throughout the story. The character development was amazing in this book, and I especially liked getting how we saw Adriana go from the unsure woman we first met, to the new reigning Queen of the Romano family.

Overall, this was a thrilling tale of young love that has grown into a dark battle between two hearts. I loved Hunter and Adriana's story and the intensity of it. I wouldn't classify it as a dark book really, but it did have some dark aspects to it that added a bit more interest to it.

"A must read second chance love story!"

- Claire Contreras, NYT Bestselling Author

Synopsis:

They say that time heals a broken heart, but you try moving on when your ex is the most famous man on the planet.

Every time I walk down the street, there he is on magazine covers and billboards plastered with his gorgeous face: Finn McKay. Now he’s a drop-dead sexy rock star, but when I knew him, he was just the boy from the wrong side of the tracks - and the first guy I ever loved. He broke my heart into a hundred pieces when he skipped town without saying goodbye – but now he’s back.

And he wants me.

I’m determined not to make the same mistakes twice, but the chemistry with Finn was always way too hot to ignore. He was the guy who had me sneaking out my bedroom window for just one more kiss, and breaking curfew parked by the riverbanks, steaming up his windows in the backseat of his car. The past five years have been good to him, real good, and between his dirty mind and that ‘I know how to make you scream’ smile, he’s breaking through my defenses all over again.

Maybe one last wild fling for old time’s sake is what I need to finally move on. But what happens when Finn wants more than my body?

This time he wants everything.

I'm admittedly not a huge fan of second chance romances, but when I read the blurb to Heartbreaker there was no way I couldn't not want to read it. The book was fast paced, sexy, and very interesting. I liked both characters, and even the secondary characters that were mentioned throughout the story.

Finn left home after high school and pursued his music career, making it big and becoming a superstar. But when he left and never looked back, he left behind his high school sweetheart, breaking her heart by not even telling her goodbye. Now, he's back in town and ready to win over the girl he's never stopped thinking about.

Eva had her heart ripped our when Finn left her all those years ago, and she never really recovered. Then he shows up in town again and seems to be everywhere she is, always in her space, and making her remember why she fell in love with him. But can the new man that Finn has turned into steal her heart all over again?

This was my first book by Melody Grace and I really liked her writing. She told the story in dual POV, but the majority of the book was told in Eva's with only a few chapters from Finn. I really liked how so much of it focused on what Eva was thinking, but during some important parts she threw in Finn's thoughts also.

These characters were wonderful and I loved how we got to see them discover their feelings for each other all over again. They had both changed a lot since high school so when they were finally together again it was like they were finding their hearts for the first time. I thought their story was beautiful, and I'm so glad I read it.

It's time to come home, Finn. It’s been seven years since Daniel Finley left his hometown in Florida for the hustle and bustle of Chicago’s city life. Since then, he’s worked hard for his position at the prestigious law firm Leighton & Associates, even when it’s caused distance and isolation from his family and friends. But that’s all about to change. On his thirtieth birthday, he receives the one thing he never dared hope for. Something that was promised to him years earlier—a note. One simple sentence from the man he’s never been able to forget.   Six words will forever change the course of their lives. Brantley Hayes has it all. Or so he thinks. When he first made the decision to take a job down in Florida, his family thought he was crazy. But, after years of living in the quiet beach town, he finally feels a sense of community. He’s surrounded himself with friends who are like family, has a job he loves, and owns a spectacular beachfront property that is his sanctuary. Yet he still feels unfulfilled, as if a piece of the puzzle is missing, and he knows exactly which piece it is. On an impulse, he follows through with a promise he made years earlier. A promise to call home the one he sent away.   Nothing is as simple as it seems. After years of separation, the former lovers are reunited, but Brantley wasn’t expecting to encounter the high walls now guarding Daniel’s heart. Daniel may not be the same person he was when he left, but he knows that the first step to healing is the note in his hand.

BRANTLEY KEPT A discreet eye on the final student to leave for the morning as Mr. Finley strode down the stairs to the front of the classroom. They were three weeks into the semester and he was ashamed to admit that, with every day that passed, his fascination with the young man grew. At first, he’d tried to convince himself that it was purely academic. The kid was smart. He’d aced all the weekly quizzes, and Brantley was more than aware of the way he watched him lecture with keen, intelligent eyes that never strayed from him. Oh, he was fascinated, all right, but he made sure to tell himself at the end of every class that it had nothing to do with the mischievous grin Daniel would flash at his friends or the easygoing laugh that would bubble up out of him at any given moment. But he knew he was lying. Daniel was quite possibly the happiest person he’d ever met, and his joy of life lit up the room and everyone in it. Including him. When Daniel stopped in front of him and dropped his paper on the desk, Brantley acknowledged him with a glance before returning his gaze back to the notes he was going over. “Any big plans this weekend, Professor?” The question had been so unexpected that he didn’t think to catch himself before he replied, “Nothing too big. Just going out with some friends. You?” Daniel smiled at him as he shoved his arms through the loops of his backpack, and Brantley couldn’t help but look at his shirt as it stretched across his broad chest. “I’m going to hit the beach. Such great waves right now.” “Ahh, you like to surf. That explains it.” When the side of Daniel’s mouth crooked up, the effect was charming as hell. The kid was a knockout. “Explains what?” Annoyed that he’d made such a stupid slipup, he looked back at the papers in front of him, hoping Daniel would get the message and leave. No such luck. “Explains what?” he asked again. Brantley sighed and rested his arms on the desk as he studied Daniel’s inviting face. “It explains your hair.” “My—oh,” he said, touching the ends of it. “Do you like it?” Stunned by the direct question, he sat back in his chair and fought the smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Do I like your hair?” “Yeah. “Does it matter?” Jesus, fuck. Stop it. Stop flirting with him. But it was too late. Daniel put his hands on the desk and leaned forward, Brantley toed the ground, shoving his chair back. “It could…” “No. No, it couldn’t,” he said as he got to his feet, shaking his head. Daniel straightened and tucked his thumbs into the straps of his backpack, no doubt to taunt him. His eyes were too knowing for someone his age, and when they held his longer than was acceptable, Brantley’s heart skipped a couple of beats. “Was there something else, Mr. Finley?” “You said you were going out with friends this weekend…” Shit, did I? “Yes, that’s right.” As Daniel ran his thumb down the left strap of his bag, he admonished himself for noticing every little move he made. He needed to get a fucking hold of himself. “Are any of them more than a friend?” If he hadn’t been watching Daniel quite so closely, he wouldn’t have believed the words that had just come out of his mouth. But he had been. So he did. “I don’t believe that’s any of your business. You better hurry or you’ll miss your next class.” Satisfied that he’d firmly dismissed Daniel, he sat down and made a show of focusing on the books lining his desk and didn’t dare look and see if he had left this time or not. He wasn’t sure what he’d do if he was still standing there. He reached up to adjust his tie, which suddenly felt a little too tight around his neck, and with each passing second that he was consciously not checking to see if he was alone, he swore that it was getting tighter. “Professor Hayes?” His head snapped up at his name, and when Daniel had his attention, he continued. “Are you gay?” Brantley’s eyes widened, and he wondered how his mouth hadn’t fallen open at the blunt question. Instead, he went with, “Excuse me?” “I asked if you were—” “I heard what you said. But I don’t see how that is any business of yours, either. You should think before you speak, Mr. Finley. I’m your teacher, and it’s time for you to leave. This conversation is over.” He flipped open one of the books on his desk and shook his head. He couldn’t believe the audacity of the kid—or the fact that he was so damn forthright. As he sat there, grinding his teeth in an effort not to look at his student—who was still standing in front of his desk—a bead of sweat ran down his collar and he cursed the fact that his nerves were getting the better of him. “I only asked because, well, I am too. And I thought it would be nice to have someone to talk to.” Well, hell. He couldn’t fault him for that. The only problem was…talking wasn’t what sprang to mind when he was around Daniel Finley. He clasped his hands on the desk and stared into the anxious face peering down at him. Daniel was worrying his lower lip with his teeth, and he suddenly looked very much the young man he was. “Are you?” he asked again, and there was no way he could deny that hesitant curiosity. “Yes, Daniel. I am.” As his words drifted between them, Daniel’s mouth slipped into a smile. “Oh.” Brantley laughed at that. He wasn’t sure what Daniel was thinking right then. He’d thought for sure with the way he’d been looking at him earlier that, if he’d admitted this, he would be fending off—or at least putting up a good show of fending off—an unwanted pass. But, instead, Daniel appeared thoughtful. “Does that bother you?” Daniel adamantly shook his head. “No.” “Are you sure?” he pressed, and the look that entered Daniel’s eyes then was so hot that he thought he may overheat. “Yes. I'm very sure.” Oh, fuck. Okay. Where the hell did the nervous guy disappear to? One minute, Daniel was endearingly awkward, and the next, he was looking at him like he wanted to strip him out of his clothes and—“Stop right there,” he said, and he wasn’t sure if he was telling himself that or the contradiction eyeing him with newfound knowledge. “Whatever you're thinking, stop thinking it.” “Why?” Yep, he was fucked. That wasn’t a word he generally used, but in this case, he was well and truly fucked. He should’ve just stuck to the run-along-now speech. “Because I'm your teacher.” “This isn’t high school. I’m an adult.” He sighed. “That may be true. But I’m your professor and this conversation is inappropriate.” “How? I just asked if you were gay and you said yes. I don't see what the problem is.” When Daniel aimed a mischievous grin at him, Brantley knew he was very aware of what the problem was. “Out,” he said, pointing to the door. “Time to leave, Mr. Finley.” This time, he made sure to watch Daniel so he knew he was actually leaving. He walked to the door, but at the last minute, he turned around to look back at him. Not willing to back down and show weakness, Brantley kept his eyes on his student as Daniel ran his tongue along his lower lip. “You should call me Finn. Everyone else does.” Christ. The kid was going to drive him to an early grave, but damn if he didn’t laugh at his audacity. “Out,” he said again, and this time Daniel pushed out the door and disappeared into the hall.

Excerpt

Case forced himself to stop. He pulled away from the drugging kisses she was giving him. He couldn’t go down that path. If he was going to take her, it would be on his terms and that meant he wasn’t going to play the idiot. He wasn’t going to ask for more than she could give him. He wasn’t going to pretend this was some grand love. She wasn’t Charlotte and he wasn’t Ian. They didn’t get that forever thing.

But they could have this.

“What’s wrong?” She looked up at him and then started to pull away.

He wasn’t going to let that happen. He turned her around so his front nestled her back. “Nothing’s wrong. I want to feel you. Do you have any idea how long I’ve waited to touch you, Mia? How often I’ve thought about this?” His hands were on her waist and he brought them up slowly. “I want to memorize every inch of your skin and do you how I’m going to do it?”

She leaned back into him. “You’re going to touch me.”

He loved how breathless she was. No other woman ever responded as honestly to him as she did. He could trust her body even if he didn’t trust the rest of her. Oh, she wouldn’t mean to hurt him. He actually believed that, but she would choose her world. She would choose her family over him. He could keep her for a little while.

“What am I going to touch you with, princess?” He moved slowly, letting his hands find the warm skin under her shirt.

“Your hands.” Her head fell back against his chest. Without heels on she didn’t quite reach his shoulders. “I want your hands everywhere, Case. They feel so good.”

“I will touch you everywhere, but that’s not all I’ll do.” He was right under her breasts. This was one of the things D/s had taught him. Sex required discipline. Patience. Control. He wanted to shove her on that bed and force his dick inside her, but that wouldn’t make it good for her. This methodical arousal of every inch of her body would make her ready for him, would make her scream for him.

Might make her stay with him for a while.

He flattened one palm on the curve of her belly, the other touching the band of her bra.

There was zero reason to hide how hard he was. He let his cock rub against her backside. “I’m going to put my hands on you. I’ll touch your breasts and cup that hot ass of yours and I will let my fingers explore how hot and wet your pussy gets for me.”

“You’re killing me, Case.” She squirmed a little as though trying to get him to move. He held her tight, his mouth against her ear. “Don’t. We haven’t talked about punishments so I’m not going to stop and spank that sweet ass, but now you’ve been warned. This is my time. It’s my time to explore your body and get you hot. I’ll give you time later, but for now you’ll let me enjoy how you feel under my hands.”

“D/s sucks,” she said with a shaky laugh.

He ran the tip of his tongue along her ear, enjoying the way she shivered. “No it doesn’t. It makes us take things slow and really get to know each other’s bodies and responses. It makes thoughtful lovers. I want to be your lover, Mia. Do you understand what I mean by that? I don’t want to be your boyfriend. I want to be your Dom. It’s different. A boyfriend can take you or leave you. A Dom is responsible for you. It means something deeper to me.”

“I’ve had boyfriends and not one of them made me feel the way you do,” she admitted.

“Please don’t stop. I’ve waited so long for this.”

He could smell her shampoo and the soap she used. He leaned down and ran his nose along the graceful column of her throat. “When I’m done touching you, I’m going to taste you.” He ran his tongue from her collarbone back up to her ear. “I’m going to lick you and we’ll see how you like a little bite.”

He nipped at her ear, just a little sharp bite that made her jump in his arms. She groaned, but it wasn’t one that told him she was in pain.

“I think I like it, Case,” she replied, her breath shaky. “The training course alone taught me that.”

He growled. “I don’t like the thought of someone else training you.”

Her body shook with her husky chuckle. “Javier and I were just friends. Promise. I liked the flogger he owned more than him. I liked the sting. I thought I could maybe survive a thud, but I got so hot when he hit me with the stinger. I wasn’t thinking about him though. I always thought of you. It was never him holding that son of a bitch and making me beg for more.”

Fuck, she could talk dirty, too and that did something for him. “I didn’t bring a flogger with me. I should have been more optimistic, but I think you’ll find I can still take care of you. I’ll find all kinds of things to torture you with, princess. But first I’m going touch everything that just became mine.”

But she won’t touch him either.

Too bad their hormones missed the memo.
