Birthday Girl

Title: Birthday Girl
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Author: Penelope Douglas
Release Date: April 17, 2018

JORDAN

He took me in when I had nowhere else to go.

He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He doesn’t treat me like I’m nothing, take me for granted, or make me feel unsafe.

He remembers me, laughs with me, and looks at me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.

I have to stop this. It can’t happen.

My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable.

Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one.

I am.

PIKE

I took her in, because I thought I was helping.

She’d cook a few meals and clean up a little. It was an easy arrangement.

As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.

The more I find my path crossing hers, though, the more she’s becoming a part of me.

But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight.

And her boyfriend’s father.

Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house.

*BIRTHDAY GIRL is a stand-alone, contemporary romance suitable for ages 18+.

If you ever need the definition of sexual tension, read this book. Pike and Jordan had me cursing them with the best kinds of insults as I read and waited to finally see them give in to their chemistry. I really enjoyed that it was almost like a slow-burn type of connection they had and then when they finally did give in it was an explosion of all kids of smexiness.

This book completely blew my mind with how amazing it was. In all honesty, I was a little nervous about the boyfriend thing and had no clue how that would play out. But not only did it end in a way that had me happy with it, it added an extra dose of intrigue into my reading. I was on the edge the entire time just waiting to see how everything would play out and I loved that this story had me so invested in it's outcome.

I thoroughly enjoyed these characters and seeing how much they wanted each other. Jordan was a very mature 18 year old which I appreciated since I feel like it makes her love interest with an older man more realistic. I adored her love of the 80's because I'm one of those people that is obsessed with the decade as well, even though I wasn't even born in it, so I easily related to her with that. Pike was one of the hottest DILF's I've read about but what had me falling for him was his compassion and worry for his son. i thought they were both very well written and developed characters and together they even more amazing.

I've been a fan of Penelope Douglas for years even though I haven't read every single book she's written. This book just solidified the reason why I consider myself a fan. Because her stories never fail to captivate me completely and have me falling in love with the characters she creates.

EXCERPT

Jordan is working at a bar, and Pike comes in to meet friends.

PIKE

“What the hell is she wearing?” I grumble, sliding into the booth.

Dutch turns his head toward me, his drink inches from his lips. “It’s the lingerie show,” he tells me. “They have it every Thursday night. The bartenders and servers don nighties or corsets and serve drinks and food. It’s fun.”

No, not really.

But I look around and see a few other ladies carrying out appetizers and bringing drinks, some of them in very thin attire. At least Jordan’s corset looks as thin as armor.

“But Jordan’s never done it before,” he goes on. “That’s what shocked me. Thought you should know.”

“Why the fuck would I want to know?” I pull a beer out of the ice bucket on the table.

“Yeah, sorry.” He turns away, mumbling into his glass, “You seem like you couldn’t care less.”

I shoot him a sideways look, hearing the laughter in his words.

Sticking the beer back in the bucket, untouched, I rise and head to the bar. I hear a snort behind me, but I don’t care. She’s kind of my responsibility, and I don’t want her doing things like this, because she thinks she needs money.

There’s only one bartender besides Jordan. The owner, Shel. I’m sure she hasn’t forgotten me, so I veer to the opposite end and catch Jordan’s attention as she pops the tops from a line of six bottles of beer.

“What the hell are you wearing?” I lean in, speaking as quietly as I can.

She jerks her head toward me, meets my eyes, and quickly turns away again like I’m the last person she wants to deal with right now.

She hands over the beers, collects the cash and spins around, punching the screen in front of her. “It’s fine,” she assures me. “It’s just a corset, Pike.”

“They are all looking at you.”

She nods, smiling sarcastically. “That’s the point.”

“Jordan,” I sigh, trying to whisper as I squeeze around some old dude at the bar. “This is a small town. What if your father were to walk in?”

“He doesn’t come in here,” she says, closing the register drawer and finally looking at me. “And neither do you, normally.” A blush crosses her cheeks. “Besides, I’m not stupid. I wouldn’t take part in something I thought would humiliate me.”

She turns and hands the change back to the customer, but he waves her off, letting her keep it. She smiles and turns back around, dropping the bills into an already overflowing canister.

“What are you even doing here?” she says, starting to mix another drink. “I thought you were sitting the bachelor party out, because…” She sets the bottle down and does air quotes as she imitates my growling voice, “‘there needed to be at least one sober person at work tomorrow’.”

I arch a brow at her. I don’t sound like that.

Reaching into my pocket, I pull out the flyer and push it over the bar at her.

She stills, and her face goes ashen. “Where did you find that?”

She grabs it and dumps it somewhere under her. To a trash can probably.

Taking a napkin, she sets it in front of a customer and gives him the fresh drink she just made.

“If you need money,” I tell her, “I’ll lend you whatever you need, okay?”

And she stops, slowly turning her eyes on me. Her gaze sharpens, angry, and she looks like she wants to yell at me, but she doesn’t. Instead she whips around and barrels down the bar and through the partition, turning only enough to crook a finger at me before she twirls back around and heads down the hallway.

My stomach sinks. I really don’t mean to piss her off as much as I do. What did I say now?

Veering through the crowd, I make my way down the empty hallway, finally coming to the same room she was crying in when I pissed her off the last time.

Entering through the open door, I see her standing with her hands on her hips and her head cocked at me.

“I would rather eat from a dumpster than take money from you,” she bites out.

I should shut up. But God help me, I can’t. “Hate to break it to you, but you already do,” I tell her. “You live in a house where you pay no rent or utilities, young lady.”

“I cook and clean for you!” she shouts, but I doubt anyone can hear us back here and through the music. “I pay my way, you arrogant prick!”

“Alright, alright,” I growl, blinking long and hard. “You’re right, okay? But, Jordan, men will get ideas. They’ll think they have a free pass and they can touch what belongs to my son. You’re embarrassing him.”

“Your son?” she mocks, laughing. “Well, you just missed him, actually. He already saw me, and he doesn’t care, Pike. He thought I looked good, and then he left with his friends. He doesn’t care!”

“Well, I care!”

The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them, and I freeze, almost too afraid to breathe.

Oh, shit. What did I just say?

Four guys.
Constant moaning.
And a revolving door across the college suite I somehow ended up in because my first name is Shawn.
They don't discriminate. Girls. Guys. Grandmas. Plants (okay maybe not plants) all walks of life stroll in stressed to the brim, and leave so satisfied I'm wondering what sort of talents lie behind that door.
My roommate calls them the pleasure ponies.
But the rest of the college campus?
They just call them the new face of Wingmen Inc. A paid for relationship service that makes big promises.
Breakup? They'll glue you back together again.
Depressed? They have the magic pill.
Lonely? Just spend a few minutes while they rub you down and you'll forget all about it.
And broken hearts? Well, that's their specialty. They'll fix you
For a price…
I swore I wouldn't get involved.
But apparently they like a challenge, and a girl who doesn't put up with their BS is basically like waving a red flag in front of a bull.
They. All. Charged.
But one holds my attention above the rest.
Knox Turner looks like a Viking — and getting pillaged is starting to look more appealing by the day. Though he's hiding something — all of them are. And the closer I get. The more I realize that some things are left better in the past.
You've read reverse harem books before — but you've never read one like this. It's not what you think, or is it? Dive in and find out…
Knox, Leo, Finn, and Slater are waiting, and they aren't patient men.
Welcome to the new face of Wingmen Inc — You're welcome.

Excerpt:

Fifteen Years Ago

I fell in love with Michael Sinclair when I was eight years old.

I can even remember the exact moment.

After years of being alone after the death of my father, my mother married one of the most eligible bachelors in London - Charles Edward Dalton Sinclair. He was wealthy, had an incredible pedigree, and adored my mother.

What was more, he also happened to have a son who was five years my senior. I was thrilled I was finally going to have a sibling. An older, protective brother. One who would cherish and look out for me. It was something I had dreamt about my whole life and it seemed as though my wish had finally been granted.

But God had a different plan.

My new stepbrother, Davis Sinclair, would quickly become the bane of my adolescent existence. My curse. He was everything but brotherly and caring.

In fact, I quickly became convinced he was the Antichrist.

After our parent’s marriage, I soon realized his biggest pleasure in life came from teasing me mercilessly and making me cry. Davis liked to see people suffer. There was a sickening type of joy that came over him when he saw someone’s pain. Since I was so young and naïve , I played right into my stepbrother’s evil machinations. It wasn’t until I was much older that I finally stopped the tears and learned the art of feigning indifference, which in turn, made Davis thankfully leave me alone.

But during my younger years, while I depended on my tears as a source of comfort, Davis’ cousin, Michael Sinclair was there to protect me.

I’ll never forget the moment he stepped into my life like a knight in shining armor when I was only eight, and he was sixteen.

It was a beautiful summer day in Surrey and I was outside playing with my dolls at my stepfather’s country estate.

“Shabby Abby!” Davis screamed at me in a shrill voice as I cried over the injustice of such an awful nickname. “Shabby Abby, are you crying like the flabby baby you are?”

He circled me and stuck out his tongue. I covered my ears with my hands and tried to block out his tormenting words.

“Leave me alone!” I cried out.

“Shabby Abby!” Davis shouted with glee. “Shabby Abby, you’re so flabby! Flabby Shabby Abby! Flabby Shabby Abby!”

Looking back now, I must admit, I was on the flabby side.

To my mother’s horror, I was a chubby child, so much so, that she had put me on a strict diet. Unfortunately, it ended up backfiring, because it turned me into a closet eater. Chocolate, potato chips and fattening baked goods became my constant companion in the hiding spaces I would sneak off to. I stole food from the pantry whenever no one was paying attention to me, which wasn’t so great for my mother’s plan, because it just so happened no one ever paid any attention to me at all.

So there I was, surrounded by my dolls, remnants of cookie crumbs littered all over my uncomfortably tight pink dress, wishing Davis would somehow magically disappear.

And that’s when something even better than his disappearance happened.

“What’s going on out here?”

The sun was glaring in my eyes as I squinted up to see who had joined Davis. If it were one of his hideous friends, I was ready to take my dolls and go inside the house for a few hours and hide inside a dressing closet where they wouldn’t be able to find me.

“I’m here with Flabby Shabby Abby!” Davis declared proudly as he pointed at me like I was diseased.

There was a break from the bright sunlight as the clouds moved, and it was at that moment I stared into Michael Sinclair’s piercing blue eyes for the very first time.

He seemed as tall as the sun. And just as handsome as all the fairy-tale heroes I read about at night.

He leaned down next to me and took in my sad face. He reached out and brushed my cheek with the back of his large hand and gave me a sympathetic smile.

“Are you okay, Abby?”

“Are you Prince Charming?” I asked in awe. “Are you here to save me from my evil stepbrother?”

He smiled at me. “Do you need saving?”

“I do,” I told him as I nodded my head. “He’s very mean to me.”

“He is?” Michael asked sympathetically as I nodded.

“He makes me cry,” I admitted softly.

“Shut up, Flabby Abby!” Davis sneered. “You talk too much!”

Michael gave me a sweet smile before standing to his full height and turning his attention to my stepbrother.

“You need to stop teasing our Abby,” Michael told him sternly.

I watched Michael with wide eyes, half in love with him already.

“Or what?” Davis sneered at him. “What will you do?”

“Punch you in the face,” Michael informed him.

Davis shook his head and laughed, then for good measure stepped close to me and leaned in so that his face was only inches from mine.

“Shabby. Flabby. Abby,” he taunted me again. Except this time he crossed a line he was warned not to go near.

It happened so fast.

One second Davis was leaning in so close I could feel his breath on my skin and the next he was lifted up away from me and punched soundly in the face.

I watched in happiness as he flew through the sky and landed with a thud on the ground, a good distance away from me.

Michael Sinclair descended, loomed over him like an imposing young demigod and grabbed him angrily by his collar.

“You’ve been warned, Davis.”

Davis was too frightened to move. He could only nod his head in acknowledgment before he ran off like the devil was chasing him.

Michael turned to face me when Davis was gone and gave me the most beautiful smile I had ever seen in my life.

“If he bothers you again, Abigail,” he said to me, “I will beat him to a bloody pulp.”

And just like that.

I finally had a hero.

I decided right then and there when I grew up I would marry Michael Sinclair.

Blog Tour (18).jpg

I went into this book already liking everything about it. I like the cover, the blurb is great and grabbed my attention, this authors work has great reviews which I was happy about - it was just all really interesting so when the ARC dropped on my kindle I clicked on it like "I'm making this book my bitch tonight." But the reality was that that didn't happen and as much as I liked a lot about this story before I read it, once I was done I didn't have the same happiness about it.

Let me say though that even with the issues I had with this story I do think it's one that a lot of people will enjoy. It was well written and I felt like you could tell the author didn't cut any corners while writing and she thought everything out. What I enjoyed most was how well the settings were described and it made me feel like I was right there with these characters.

What bothered me most about the story was Michael and his inability to make up his mind. I felt like the majority of the book focused on his hot and cold indecisive ass and after awhile it got to be very very old. One second he's pushing Abby against the wall and giving us hints of all the dirty things he wants to do with her. But then the next he's pushing her away and being rude and cold to her. And this happened over and over...and over again. After the second time it just became boring and too repetitive for my liking. Especially when it was almost all that was focused on between these characters instead of anything that made me feel a connection. I felt like I was stuck in some time loop and reliving the same scene.

Another thing was the lack of information on Michael's family. This book does connect to other books the author has written, which I haven't read, so I'm thinking maybe there was more information in them. What took me back was when Michael mentioned something about his brother in such a blase way and here I was not even knowing he had a brother at that point. It felt more like I was expected to know than as if I was getting this information for the first time.

Then when it came to Abby's family we learned some about them but then that situation didn't feel resolved by the end. And it bothered me that the mother Abby described throughout the book and had issues with was completely different in the epilogue. It was just an odd combination for this semi-secondary character apparently getting a personality change that we never saw or understood. As for the other members of Abby's family, I would have loved to see their demise but sadly it was like they were completely forgotten by the end.

Overall, there was clearly a lot I didn't enjoy about this book but I did like the authors writing and I think the overall plot idea was a good one. I'd definitely give this author another try and I look forward to see what she comes up with next. I would still recommend this book to anyone that likes an Alpha-asshole hero.

Zack
Finding my teammate in bed with my wife made the decision I had been fighting with for years easier.
It’s time to move on.
A fresh start and a new NHL team in a big city. Most importantly, it’s my son Jack’s best shot.
It would be both of our best shots.
Denise
After a bad childhood, I made sure I would succeed, so I lived for my job.
The problem is I die a little with each patient I lose. It’s part of my career at Hudson Children’s Oncology Hospital, but it doesn’t make the sting of loss any easier.
Seeking anything other than a life saved isn’t on my agenda until a NHL player walks into my hospital with his son.
We’re officially off script the moment we meet.
If this love is anything, it’s unscripted.
“Zack.” I hear her voice and just look at my wife. The woman who said she would love me in good times and in bad yet is currently holding a sheet to cover her naked body. The four-carat engagement with matching eternity wedding ring glistens in the light. “It’s just ...” she starts to say, and I look over at the man in bed next to her. In our bed.
“It’s over.” I say the two words I swore I wouldn’t say no matter how hard it got. No matter how much I saw her push me away, no matter that I always suspected she was cheating on me. Then I look over at the man who I called a brother, the man who stood by my side on and off the ice. “You’re scum.”
“It just happened,” Colton says, getting out of the bed. At least he’s wearing boxers. His knee is still wrapped from the operation he had last month, which is why he wasn’t on the road with us, which is how I surprised them.
We were on the road for the whole week and due back tomorrow, but I hightailed it out of there to get home to my family and my son. “It just so happened you walked into my house and slept with my wife?” I ask him, and I have to wonder why I’m not more pissed, why I’m not more angry with them. “You come here and sleep with my wife with my son under the same roof.”
“Zack,” my wife says, and I look over at her again. Tears are rolling down her cheeks, her perfectly made up face now streaked with the black mascara she always wears. “Please let’s ...”
I shake my head, putting my hands in my pockets. “Let’s what? Let’s talk about this?” I throw my head back and laugh. “Let’s talk about the fact that our son is in his room dying. Let’s talk about the fact that instead of helping him, you’re just helping yourself. Let’s talk about the fucking fact that instead of being there by his side with me, you chose to escape the fucking reality that our son won’t make it to six years old.”
“No.” She shakes her head, and I know that I’ve about had it.
“I’ll give you an hour,” I tell them both. “One hour and I want you packed and at the door when I come back.”
“But—” she says.
“But nothing, Chantal. You did what you had to do for you, and now I’m doing what I need to do for our son.”
I turn and walk out of our bedroom, then down the winding staircase that leads to the big brass front doors. Once outside in the warm Arizona air, I take my phone out of my pocket and call the only person I know who has my back no matter what. My agent and best friend, Jamie.
He answers after one ring, and it doesn’t surprise me he sleeps with his phone in his hand. “What’s up?” he says, his voice sleepy since it’s four a.m. in New York.
“I want out of Arizona, make the trade. Call the powers that be; I want out,” I tell him, getting into my Range Rover.
“You can’t just demand that,” he says, and I hear sheets rustle.
“Just walked in on Colton fucking my wife, so you can bet your ass I can. Make it happen. Call New York because it’s the only place I’ll go. I don’t care if I take a pay cut.”
“That fucking scumbag,” he says. “I’ll call them now.”
“Jamie, there is a top-notch doctor who specializes in cancer in New York. Max Horton’s sister,” I tell him quietly and slowly drive out of my gate.
“I’ll make it happen,” he says softly. “I’ll let you know what they say.”
“Jamie, I’m leaving here in a week regardless of what they say,” I tell him and disconnect the call.
“One week,” I say to myself. “One fucking week.”

Something So Unscripted was a low angst, sweet, amazing read. Zack and Denise fell into a romance quickly and with ease. There really wasn't any big sweep-her-off-her-feet moments, but that worked for these characters. I loved that from the very beginning you just knew that they belonged together and they fit in each others lives perfectly.

There was still a lot happening in the story that kept me intrigued and forcing myself to not skip to the end to find out what happened. I devoured this book in one sitting because I refused to get up or let my focus wonder to anything other than these characters. I thought everything was very well written and that it all played out in the best possible way for all the characters involved in the story.

Overall, this is a book I would recommend to anyone, even readers that aren't sports-romance fans because this book deserves to be read. It does involve characters from the past novels but it can be read as a standalone with no problem or spoilers about those books.

When her nose isn't buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she's in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It's a good thing her characters do what she says, because even her Labrador doesn't listen to her...

Scarlett is always the sensible one: The sober driver. The planner. The one holding your hair back while you're worshiping the porcelain gods.

Week-after-week, she visits Jock Row with her friends—the universities hottest party scene and breeding ground for student athletes. And if keeping her friends out of trouble, and guys out of their pants, was a sport, she'd be the star athlete.

Being a well known jock-blocker gets her noticed for all the wrong reasons; just like that, she's banned from Jock Row. NO GUY WANTS A GIRL AROUND WHO KEEPS THEIR JOCK FRIENDS FROM GETTING LAID.

"Rowdy" Wade is the hot shot short-stop for the university's baseball team—and the unlucky bastard who drew the short straw: keep little Miss Goody Two-Shoes out of the Baseball House.
But week-after-week Scarlett returns, determined to get inside.

His to Claim

His to Claim
Shelly Bell
Forbidden Lovers Book 2

Fate brought them together. Family could tear them apart.

Ryder McKay may be a playboy, but he's never been a fool. Not until he met the woman he simply knew as Jane. For one night, he dropped his guard, but in the morning she disappeared---along with a copy of his top secret technology.

When it ends up in the hands of his biggest enemy---his father---Ryder knows without a doubt he's been betrayed. And when he finds Jane again, a year later, he can't decide what's worse---that her mother is marrying his brother, or that he still finds Jane irresistible, despite the fact that she's a liar, a thief, and his father's latest protégé.

Jane Cooper does have a secret, but it's not the one Ryder thinks. As their rekindled passion changes into something deeper, they'll have to work together to untangle a web of lies and corruption that will shatter everything they thought they knew about their pasts. Because Jane's not the only one with a secret---and this secret is getting people killed.

His to Claim is a steamy and suspenseful novel that had me on the edge of my seat from page one. Jane and Ryder had an instant connection that was evident throughout the whole book and left me in love with both of them. Surrounding their relationship was a mess of mystery and murder trying to pull them apart but the chemistry between them wouldn't let that happen.

I loved the crazy ride this story took me on. It kept me captivated and dying to know how it would end with all of it's mystery. I thought it was really well written and the pace of the story was perfect, it kept me wanting more but not moving too slow that I thought I would never get my answers. The steaminess of it was perfect and I enjoyed the small BDSM aspects a lot. Overall, this is a big recommendation from me.

Author:  Penelope Douglas
Release Date:  April 17, 2018

Synopsis:
