Greed

Lies. Lies. Lies.
Hell hath no fury like a man who has no fucks to give and a mission to fulfill his promise.

I’m hungry.My greed is insatiable.
I’m a slave to the need. The drive for more. For everything.
Once I decide I want something, the greed for it consumes me.
I want answers.
I want justice.
I want vengeance.
I want HER.

My best friend and his sister—the girl I vowed could trust in me and whom I would always protect—dropped off the map two years ago. My own father pledged assurances that they'd been living a life they deserved.

Lies. Lies. Lies.
Hell hath no fury like a man who has no fucks to give and a mission to fulfill his promise.

I may be a greedy sonofabitch, but I’m also a loyal one. Cross me or my brothers, and I’ll come for your throat. And my teeth are razor sharp.

When I discover the corruption running deep within my own bloodline, I take a stand to right the wrongs. I had no idea their darkness would lead me to the light—to her.

The Lust I have for her will keep me grounded.
The Wrath for those who betrayed us will ignite the fight inside me.
And the Greed for victory will consume our enemies in a tidal wave of Hell’s fury.

They say the three gates of Hell are Lust, Wrath, and Greed.
Well, open up, motherfuckers…Daddy’s home.
I am Micah Dixon.
I am Greed.

I just don't know how I feel about this book. For me, it didn't have clear direction that it was heading in, especially after the first 30%. In the beginning I definitely thought that Micah, aka Greed, was a bit of a psycho and that he was going to end up with a certain character. Maybe I was reading the entire situation wrong but it really did seem like that's what was happening to me. But then the story veered off into a completely different direction, and in doing so abandoned that character.

On top of that, the entire first 60% or so dragged for me. It was the same events of almost the entire series that was yet again told in a different POV. And while I did like Micah for the most part, I wanted more excitement. Especially since this is the last book of the series and tied everything together. I can say that it did pick up some and had me a lot more intrigued in the last 40% but it was almost too little too late. By that point I was just ready to get to the end and see how the Elite was going to turn out.

Overall, I can't really say this series has been a winner for me but I can say that it was certainly a crazy ride. I think the idea behind it was a really good one but sadly, for me, it wasn't executed in the most captivating way.

The Elite Seven

7 AUTHORS.
7 STORIES.
7 DEADLY SINS.

Since 1942, The Elite Seven Society have created and guided influential leaders, molding the country into something better. This society was birthed by Malcom Benedict, II who wanted more for Americans. More wealth. More influence. More power. Some leaders have the skills, but not the influence, and that simply wasn’t fair according to Mr. Benedict. He invested his own money and time to construct a society that bred the best of the best, year after year.

But to be the best, you must be ruthless.

Good leaders make sacrifices. Sometimes the sacrifices are hard, but the rewards are plentiful. Mr. Benedict made sure to indulge these leaders with their utmost desires. A devout Catholic himself, he designed a society that rewarded his leaders with the sins that were frowned upon. If they were giving up love and happiness and joy for the betterment of the country, they deserved something in its stead.

Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust.

Choosing leaders for this society means that it takes intense focus. Only seven are to be selected, and the investments and time are showered upon the new seven chosen every four years. The predecessors of each group of seven choose people who fit the sin that will mold them into who they are needed to be in the future—what America needs them to be. This is after a detailed study of many potential candidates. The university’s acting dean behaves as a liaison for the society bringing the college applicants to the predecessors so that the selection may begin. The society members who are going out will bring forth a candidate that the society votes on and approves.

After they are chosen, the initiates are given a token and an invitation to initiation. The initiation will be a test to their character and ability to do what’s right for the betterment of the society. Once the initiates pass their test, they are discreetly branded with the mark of the society, and are groomed through challenges during the course of their elite education to breed them into the influential people they were meant to be.

Once in The Elite Seven, there is no getting out. The money and power are their reward. Should they choose to stray or break the rules, the society strips them of everything. Anything they once had will be removed. Opportunities will never arise. They will no longer have the support of the society. To this day, there have been no known occurrences of anyone from the society having to be banished. This elite group of people are what every young man and woman aspire to be a part of. While the group is a secret society, they are whispered about amongst the privileged folks in the country. Anyone who is anyone knows of the group and secretly hopes it’s their son or daughter who are selected, for good fortune is showered on the family for decades to come.

Fearless King had everything I love about the brothers-best-friend trope. It had angst, and drama, and the sweetness of two characters knowing they shouldn't be together but unable to stop the pull of their chemistry. It was amazingly addictive and once I opened this book up I couldn't stop reading. Ford and Liv were just perfect together and I couldn't get enough of them.

Ford was so protective of Liv and it pained me to see him trying to get close to her, knowing that he shouldn't, but still trying to get around the walls she had built up. He hurt her in the past, albeit unintentionally, but it made it harder for him to get close to her. I wanted to physically push these two together at some parts when they were both being stubborn, but I not so secretly loved the angst they brought to the story.

Liv, I could just hug this girl. I felt for her so much as she struggled to live up to her brothers expectations. It also made me want to slap her brother a time or two but I'll just leave that for the next book. But then Ford was there to swoop in and made her happy again and I loved it. Seriously, these two characters had me swooning all over my house last night.

Overall, read this dang book! The romance, the friendship you see in this group, all of it is amazing. I actually haven't read the previous books in this series yet but you can bet that I will be going back to rectify that mistake ASAP. I'm also dying for the next book now, and won't be waiting too patiently to get my hands on it.

Falling for You

Falling For You, an all-new sexy and emotional brother’s best friend romance from Jennifer Van Wyk is available now!

JVW_FallingforYou_ebook.jpg

Fake it ‘til you make it has been the motto I live by since my mother died.
I’m also doing a really bad job at the making it part.
The night we met, I was at my lowest.
But you gave me a reason to feel happy again.
For the first time in over a year, I feel optimistic.
You and I? We’re the same.
Don’t form attachments. Follow the rules. Don’t dream of a future.
Too bad our hearts wouldn’t listen.
And this storm we’re going through?
The one that threatens to rip us apart?
It doesn’t care that I’m falling for you.
Falling For You is a different kind of brother’s best friend romance and is as emotional
as it is sizzling.

Falling For You was my first read from Jennifer Van Wyk, and quickly drew me in with these quirky characters. Chloe was having one of the crappiest days when she met Rex and he swooped in like a true book boyfriend and cheered her up. From there their romance progressed pretty fast, yet didn't lack any excitement.

For the most part I enjoyed getting to see them come together and I liked how funny they could be. Rex showed his protective side on more than one occasion, but he also knew when to just sit back and let Chloe figure some things out on her own. It really showed the trust they had in each other and that they honestly worked very well as a couple.

With that being said, I did have some issues with the story. One being Rex's sense of humor that could read more like a 15 year old boys rather than a grown man's. I'm not a giant prude when it comes silly humor, but at times with Rex, and even a few moments with Chloe, it all got to be a little much and felt like I was reading about kids. Also about Rex, I didn't fully understand the point of his drama that was involved in the story. It felt like such an afterthought that I wasn't sure why it was featured to begin with. It didn't make me hate the book, but it did have me questioning why it was there and if I was missing what the point was.

There were also parts to the story that got a little confusing. Sometimes there would be dialogue that started off with a main character talking, with no hint on who the character was talking to. Especially at chapter beginnings where it would take almost a full page to finally learn who was speaking the second part of the dialogue. I'm not sure if this was for a suspense type of thing, or if it was meant to be clear and just wasn't very obvious to me, but either way I found it to be confusing and it had me reading some parts more than once.

Overall, the book wasn't a complete winner for me but it was good and I enjoyed these characters. I didn't have a problem reading this book before the previous one but it does have me wanting to go back and read it. I'm also looking forward to what's next in this series and the little hints of the next character definitely have me wanting to get my hands on it.

EXCERPT
“Kneel.”
Without question, I slowly rise from the bed and follow Saint to the middle of the room. When he positions himself so Aleksei can see, I know what I have to do.
I drop to my knees and bow my head.
“Oh my.” A stunned gasp leaves Aleksei. “That is incredible. Just like a trained dog.”
A strong metallic taste fills my mouth, alerting me that I’ve drawn blood by biting down on my tongue so hard.
“What is your name?” Saint asks numbly.
“Aнгел.”
“And who am I?”
“мастеp,” I reply softly, using my hair as a veil.
“What? I can’t hear you.”
Before I have a chance to reply, Saint reaches down and grips my chin, forcing me to look up at him. I arch my neck, locking eyes with him. The amber swirls mingle among the flecks of green and set me alight. He is barely holding on.
“мастеp,” I say, louder this time.
“Good girl.” He releases me while I sag forward in humiliation. “You know what happens when you disobey me?”
“Yes, мастеp.” The truth is, I don’t know what punishment he intends to deliver. He reveals what a moment later.
“Lift your dress.”
And just like that, I’m transported back to the night when Saint first struck me with his belt.
I know for this to be believable, Saint has to make the punishments credible. But the thought of being hit again has me whimpering.
“I said lift your fucking dress.” Saint’s tone is venomous. With no other choice, I do as he demands.
When I hear his belt being unbuckled and threaded through the loops of his pants, I brace myself for what comes next.
My back faces Aleksei, so he has a clear view of my ass. My lace underwear leaves nothing to the imagination, but it appears he wants more. “Take them off.”
I lock eyes with Saint, begging he doesn’t force me to bow to this pervert’s demands, but he maintains his apathetic façade. Yet underneath this disguise, I know he’ll always protect me.
“With all due respect, Aleksei, you asked me to show you, so please allow me to do my job.” Being called a job causes me to flinch as though he kicked me in the guts. I know it’s part of the plan, but it’s hard not to get lost in the past.
“You’re right. Sorry. I got carried away. Continue.” His politeness is beyond insulting, as he’s apologizing for suggesting Saint strip me when he whips me into submission.
This is so fucked up.
Saint walks around me and kicks my legs apart. I suppress the need to scream. He doesn’t give me any warning. I hear the vicious hiss slicing through the air just before the pain hits me. With a loud grunt, I propel forward but remain kneeling.
My ass throbs from where Saint brought down his belt, but I know he could have struck me a lot harder. When he hits me over the back of my thighs, I whimper but remain upright. This strike was softer than the first.
“Do you have anything you want to say to me?”
Whack.
Tears sting my eyes, but I refuse to cry. “I’m s-sorry, мастеp. I won’t disobey you a-again.”
Whack.
“Are you sure?” Even though Saint barely breaks a sweat from hitting me, his breathlessness reveals it’s taking every ounce of his willpower not to kill Aleksei.
When I hear the belt being swung into position, I cry out, “Yes! Yes. I’m sorry. I won’t d-do it again.”
I brace myself for another strike, but it doesn’t come. “Put down your dress.”
With shaky hands, I do as he says.
Since I’m facing away from Saint, I can’t see what’s going on, but I’m guessing from the silence it’s not good.
“That’s it?” Aleksei is far from impressed. It seems he will only be satisfied when I’m crying out in pain and begging for mercy.
“Yes. She submitted, did she not?”
Silence.
The air is thick with challenge. Saint’s methods aren’t satisfactory because Aleksei knows he could have been a lot crueler.
“She fought me like a wild cat. I think she likes you.”
My cheeks heat, but I squash down my embarrassment because this exercise was supposed to convince Aleksei otherwise. I quickly rack my brain, hoping to prove Aleksei wrong, but Saint is two steps ahead.
“She fears me,” he argues. “She doesn’t know you yet, but I’ve broken her. Just allow me to spend more time with her, and I promise, she will fear you too. I’m the only one who can break her.”
“Very well. But if your methods don’t prove satisfactory, and I don’t see a change very soon, I will take over. Are we clear?”
My blood turns cold.
“We’re clear,” Saint replies with bite.
“I won’t have her behaving like a rabid dog because you know what happens to them?” Aleksei pauses while the room drops ten thousand degrees. “I shoot them.”
Make no mistake, he’s warning us both.
Saint grips the back of my neck, hinting I’m to stand. When I do, he leads me back over to the bed. He won’t look at me, and the detachment has me getting onto the bed, desperate for them to leave so I can process this on my own. Without him asking, I place my arms over my head after I lie down.
A tear leaks from my eye when he cuffs me, but I turn my cheek so he can’t see.
“Let’s go into my office. We have some things to discuss.” Just as Saint moves to rise, Aleksei says something which has me questioning how good of an actress I really am. “Gag her. You said she was shouting earlier.”
You’re going to be a good little girl, aren’t you, Willow?
I suddenly find it impossible to breathe.
I’m moments away from blowing our ruse when a tender caress floats across my flank. Though it’s a subtle touch, it’s enough. “That’s not necessary. She won’t scream.” Saint recognizes my panic; he knows what memories claw to the surface when I’m gagged.
“I said gag her,” Aleksei perseveres, needing to hold on to some semblance of control.
I know I told Saint to do whatever it takes, but that’s my hard limit, so I don’t know if I can stomach that. But I should know by now that Saint will always be the alpha. “Aleksei, you just said you’re willing to allow me to do this my way. Are you going back on your word?”
I don’t know why his word is so important. He’s a fucking criminal, for god’s sake. But I remember Saint saying that Aleksei does hold some honor among his men. I can only hope he’s right.
“So be it. But if I hear a peep out of her, it’ll be the last for quite some time.”
I gulp as his threat is filled with promise.
“She’ll be quiet,” Saint assures, speaking for me as he knows I’m close to breaking. “Let’s go.”
When he rises from the bed, I turn my cheek to look at him. But when I lock eyes with Aleksei instead, I realize I have to be more careful. Although we have convinced him today, tomorrow may not be as easy.
Saint doesn’t look back and is quick to leave. I soon find out why that is.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?” Aleksei blocks the doorway while I watch on in horror. He’s going to kill Saint and make me watch. We haven’t fooled him at all.
When Saint reaches into his pocket and produces the key to my cuffs, I sense he has a plan after all. Aleksei seems disappointed he surrendered it so easily.
Saint opens the door, hinting for Aleksei to move. He eventually does but not before he grins my way. The gesture sends a shiver down my spine.
This is only the beginning of things to come.

After: I hire him the perfect assistant.

My entire life can be summed up in before and afters, but something happens in the middle.
A meeting.
And it changes the course of everyone’s lives forever.

God I really don't know where to start with this review. I'm not long after finishing and I feel like these characters are going to be with me for a while. This author really knows how to get your emotions going. I'm all over the place right now I was happy, sad, crying and angry without this book. I really loved Jesse from the start of this book she is a great character and such a strong woman. By the end of the book I loved her even more. This woman isn't like anything I have ever read she is the most unselfish person ever. Do I think what she did was right in not sure to be honest. But I really do understand why she choose to do it. So she did what she had to do. But this woman is a great mother wife and best friend. She is a true protector and is just amazing.

Emery ok this guy is great but I'm a lil on the fence about him. Ye he's sexy a great husband and dad. But there is just something that I didn't get about him. It really kills me to say it but it could be that I was just so sucked in by Jesse that she took over for me. I did love that he loved his wife more than everything she was his world they were college sweethearts and even after having 2 children they were still got for each other. I really do love them as a couple.

I don't want to really say to much in my review cause it would spoil the story and you really don't want to have this book spoiled you HAVE to read it. This author always puts so much emotion in her books. They are so well written and the twist his the twist is just crazy brilliant and so do unexpected Marni Mann your amazing. I would highly recommend this book this story is beautiful, emotional, deep, engaging and brilliant.

To Tame a Wild Cowboy

To Tame a Wild Cowboy
Cupid, Texas Book 7
Lori Wilde
May 21, 2019

What would it take to tame a wild cowboy?

One minute, Rhett Lockhart is a love ‘em and leave ‘em bull rider with a slow, sexy smile, a swagger, and not a care in the world. The next, he learns his free-wheeling days are over: a baby has been abandoned in the hospital, and there’s no question: he’s the father. But from the first moment he gazes into his daughter’s eyes, he knows the moment has come to say ‘no’ to no-strings. It’s time to grow up.

Standing in his way is the baby’s foster mother, Tara Alzate, who doesn’t quite believe Rhett is ready to change his ways. Still, she’s not not immune to his considerable charms. So when he proposes a marriage of convenience and shared custody, against her better judgement, she says “I do.” Can Tara tame this wild cowboy and make her own, long-buried dreams come true?

To Tame a Wild Cowboy is the seventh book in Lori Wilde's Cupid, Texas series, and my first read from the series. I didn't have a problem starting with this book though and I would say it could be read as a standalone. But if you like the book as much a I did you will definitely want to go back and read the previous ones.

Now, I'm not usually a big fan of the secret baby trope, but in this book it definitely worked for these characters. I enjoyed getting to see Rhett take the responsibility of having a daughter so seriously and I loved the sweetness of getting to see him lean on Tara for help. It wasn't always easy for them but they really came together when it mattered and I thought the story perfectly depicted how perfect they were together.

Bottom line, I definitely recommend reading this book if you're looking for a sexy as sin cowboy that has some adorable chemistry with a caring NICU nurse. The book is intriguing right from the start and will have you wanting to abandon reality as you read.

Sloth

Idle hands are the best tools for the devil’s work.
I am Rush Dempsey.
I am Sloth.

SLOTH BY GIANA DARLING
AN ELITE SEVEN IS LIVE!
I don’t give a fuck.
Not about money or fame, beauty or power. I’ve had all those things since birth, and trust me, they’re a fucking snooze.
I don’t give a fuck about anyone, not even myself.
Until my father proves evil can exist in the most holy of places.
For the first time ever, something like interest stirs in my soul.
He wants me to enroll at St. Augustine.
Join The Elite.
Court the virginal daughter of Archbishop Savoie.
Prove that I’m worth the family name?
I’ll do it all.
And I’ll do it so well, no one will know what’s coming.
People are so quick to underestimate the wicked and lazy.
They forget idle hands are the best tools for the devil’s work.
I am Rush Dempsey.
I am Sloth.

This book has me on the fence a bit. On one hand, I enjoyed the story and getting to see some events from a different perspective. But on the other, I felt like there wasn't enough explanation to things involving Rush. He was such a mysterious character in the previous books and I really thought he would have some kind of epic story but sadly that just didn't happen for me.

There was almost more of a romance in this book than any of the previous ones since Rush was by far the sweetest hero and didn't go out of his way to hurt the heroine. Which has been the theme of most of these books so far. But again, there wasn't enough explanation or scenes with Rush and Isabelle together for me to truly feel that romance.

So really the book wasn't dark, not very romantic, and honestly a bit confusing at times when I was trying to keep up with where we were in timeline. Maybe if things were fleshed out a little more I would have really enjoyed it, but as is this book was only okay for me and didn't seem to add all that much to the overall series. It ended with a scene we already saw with just one smaller scene that was new, which provided the shocking ending, but I wanted more so that it felt like we were actually getting new information and not just the same information we found out in the previous books. It wasn't much of a surprise for me since that's what I was expecting to be revealed in either this book or Greed but I can say that after this ending I'm really excited to see how the next book will turn out.
