EXCERPT
“Good to see you again, Niklaus,” she said, keeping her voice low as she poured his cup. “You know, I’m starting to think you’re purposely seeking me out.”
That corner of his mouth drew up again, but she wouldn’t consider that a smile, not with the way he was looking at her. “I am, unless you mind.”
Oh…
She hadn’t thought he would come right out and admit it. “No,” she said after catching her breath, her face flushed. “Not at all.”
Reagan was readying to walk away when he gestured to the seat opposite him. “You have a minute?”
“I—sure.” She didn’t think she could have walked away if she tried. “What’s up?”
“What are you doing after work?”
She swallowed, the sound loud even to her own ears. “I’m…uh…well, nothing. Just home, I guess.”
When had she turned into this stuttering mess? Like she had never talked to a guy before?
“Come home with me then.” He said that without blinking or stuttering, and making sure she understood just how serious he was.
Since they weren’t busy, she didn’t mind sitting with him, actually found that she enjoyed being in his presence, even if he didn’t reveal much. As the statement and the implications of it hung between them, she had no idea how to respond. She wasn’t even sure therewas a correct way to respond to that.
But after a second, she found her voice. “What are you asking for?”
The question was whispered, almost as though she was afraid that their conversation might be overheard. Before he could answer, as she was finally accepting what he had asked moments before, she knew, as any woman would, exactly what he wanted.
“One night,” he said, his gaze like a physical caress as it swept over her from head to toe and back again. “Or two.”
A flush of heat swept through her at the dark promise she saw in those blue eyes of his. No one had ever looked at her that way before, like she was utterly, and completely, desirable.
Like she was the only thing he wanted to taste…
A case of mistaken identity led to Niklaus Volkov's worst night in his life. Being tortured for days wasn't even the worst part. That came in the form of having to watch his girlfriend, the love of his life, be murdered in front of him. When he was let go he vowed he would get revenge on those who took his reason for breathing away. So when an offer was made for him to train and get the skills needed to take down those men, he accepted. He became Red.
Years later he's almost to the end of his mission, taking out anyone that was there the night his life ended. But then he meets her. Reagan. It was only supposed to be one night, maybe two. She changes things for him, things he never thought could be changed. And he doesn't know how to deal with it.
"Do not fear death. Embrace it. Pain is inevitable, learn to love it."
I have a newly found obsession with anything Mafia so when I saw this book I thought it was the perfect opportunity to discover a new author and quench my thirst for a hot Mafioso. Klaus was everything I could hope with his crazy possessiveness, his, bordering on stalkerish, behavior, and the sexy as hell hint of crazy he had. I just can't resist a man like him when it comes to my reading and by the end of the book I was more than a little in love with him.
As much as I loved Klaus' character, Reagan was the complete opposite. I didn't like her that much, mostly because I felt like I didn't know her. So much of her character was skipped over so that the story could focus on Klaus and his vengeance, which I loved getting to know more about, but I do wish we had gotten more of Reagan's story. There were things about her life while Klaus was away that weren't explained fully and it made me a little confused about, not just her character, but the storyline.
Overall, I really liked this writing and the authors twist on the normal Mafia book. I may have had some issues with how the story played out but I will still definitely be checking out this author for more. There were many side characters mentioned that I'm dying to know more about so I'll be going back to read those books very soon.
